Types/ Categories of PhD Student (Studentship):

1. Regular and Full Time:

1. A student in Regular and Full Time Category works full-time for his/her PhD thesis. He/she receives assistantship from IIIT Senapati^* or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.

2. The Financial Assistantship/ Scholarship from the Institute or the Fellowship from External funding agency is granted to them as per its governing rules and subject to satisfactory academic progress and satisfactory performance in assigned teaching assistant duty.

3. They must fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria.

* Research assistantship will be available to eligible students for “Regular and Full Time Category” as per Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) phase-III norms for Engineering discipline.

2. Employed and Part Time:

1. A student in Employed and Part Time Category is regular employee of IIIT Senapati, who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service.

2. He/she should be able to attend the classes of PhD coursework.

3. He/she works part-time for his/her PhD thesis.

4. He/She must be currently a regular employee of IIIT Senapati with at least two years of professional experience at IIIT Senapati, Manipur.

5. IIIT Senapati does NOT provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.

6. No Objection Certificate from the Head of the concerned department along with the approval from the Director, IIIT Senapati, Manipur must be submitted with the application form.. The application without No Objection Certificate will NOT be considered.

7. GATE/NET qualification is not mandatory criterion for this category.

8. Minimum Eligibility criterion: Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60%.

3. Self-Financed and Full Time:

1. The candidates under Self-Financed and Full Time Category pursue the PhD programme at IIIT Senapati, Manipur without getting financial assistantship from IIIT Senapati, Manipur.

1. They pursue PhD programme at the Institute on full time basis.

2. The students under this category must be able to attend classes regularly as per the schedule of the Institute during the course work and do research work by reporting every day to the supervisor/ department.

3. The final admission of the candidates under this category is based on the performance in the written test and / or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credentials of the candidates, etc.

4. Apart from fulfilling minimum eligibility criteria as mentioned, one year of experience in the relevant field is mandatory.

4.  Part Time:

1. The candidates under Part Time Category are professionally employed persons, who can attend classes and do research work at the Institute while employed. These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute during the course work.

2. They pursue PhD programme at the Institute on part time basis.

3. The candidate under this category must be a regular employee of his/her organization with at least 1 (one) year of experience at the time of applying and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought.

4. They should submit No Objection Certificate in prescribed format (See: NOC Format) from the employer along with the application. The application without No Objection Certificate will NOT be considered.

5. The final admission of the candidates under this category is based on the performance in the written test and / or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credentials of the candidates, etc.

6. The Institute does NOT give any scholarship/ fellowship to the students under this category.

7. They must fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria.

5. Project Staff and Full Time:

1. The candidates under Project Staff and Full Time Category are presently working on sponsored R&D projects at IIIT Senapati.

2. They pursue PhD programme at the Institute on full time basis. Therefore it is preferable that their R&D project work are relevant to their PhD Thesis Work.

3. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, then his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is absorbed in some other R&D Projects or he/she is granted an assistantship/ fellowship from any other agency.

4. They are not entitled to receive Scholarship/ Fellowship from the Institute.

5. They should submit No Objection Certificate in prescribed format (See: NOC Format) from the Dean-R&D with due approval from the Director, IIIT Senapati, Manipur along with the application. The application without No Objection Certificate will NOT be considered.

6. The final admission of the candidates under this category is based on the performance in the written test and / or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credentials of the candidates, etc.

7. They must fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria.

6. External and Part Time:

1. The candidates under External and Part Time Category are sponsored (with a study leave for doing course work) by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry with adequate Research Facilities for doing PhD at IIIT Senapati, Manipur.

2. They pursue PhD programme at the Institute on part time basis.

3. The PhD student under this category carried out the PhD Thesis Research Work mainly at his/her parent organization under a Local Supervisor but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member of IIIT Senapati, Manipur as a Main Supervisor.

4. The candidate under this category must be a regular employee of his/her organization with at least 1 (one) year of experience at the time of applying and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought.

5. They should submit Sponsorship Letter for Extenal Category in prescribed format (See: Sponsorship Letter for External Category Format) from the employer along with the application. The application without Sponsorship Letter will NOT be considered.

6. The final admission of the candidates under this category is based on the performance in the written test and/ or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credentials of the candidates, etc.

7. The Institute does NOT give any financial assistantship/ fellowship to the students under this category.

8. They must fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria.

7.   Sponsored and Full Time:

1. The candidates under Sponsored and Full Time Category are sponsored (with a study leave of minimum three years) by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing PhD at IIIT Senapati, Manipur.

2. They pursue PhD programme at the Institute on full time basis.

3. The candidate under this category must be a regular employee of his/her organization with at least 1 (one) year of experience at the time of applying and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought.

4. They should submit Sponsorship Letter in prescribed format (See: Sponsorship Letter Format) from the employer along with the application. The application without Sponsorship Letter will NOT be considered.

5. The final admission of the candidates under this category is based on the performance in the written test and/ or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credentials of the candidates, etc.

6. The Institute does NOT give any financial assistantship/ fellowship to the students under this category.

7. They must fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria.

  Important Note regarding Hostel Accommodation:

For students pursuing PhD on part-time basis, the hostel accommodation is NOT provided. If the hostel accommodation is needed (for example, during course work), they have to request for it and pay the required fees for it and it is subject to availability.
